The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

By Joseph Murphy

This book is a great teacher. It helps us create a bridge between our objective mind and the subjective or the more subtle mind.

The objective mind governs the day-to-day rational activities while the subconscious mind is like a deeper reality that takes inputs from the active mind, but also has its own intelligence.

As per the author, the inner mind is the world “within” us. He goes on to say that “The world within is the only creative power. Everything you find in your world of expression has been created by you in the inner world of your mind, whether consciously or unconsciously”.

Thus, he teaches that in times of difficulty, we should focus on the positive. The subconscious mind will then pick up that thought and positive changes will manifest.

“Never use expressions as ‘I can’t afford it’ or ‘I can’t do this.’ Your subconscious mind takes you at your word.”

This is the core theme of the book and as I went through it, I started reflecting on my life.

The author has quoted stories from real life. They made me realise that if I could make the concept work, I could become a more peaceful and happier person.

The structure of the book is very interesting.

It starts with “The Treasure House within you”, creating anticipation and hope. The Treasure House is the subconscious mind.

The author’s bold statement at the end of chapter 1 calls to action our deep-seated beliefs and provides succour to the tired and weary.

“You are the captain of your soul (subconscious mind) and the master of your fate. Remember. You have the capacity to choose. Choose life! Choose health! Choose happiness!”

Anticipation leads the way to a logical foundation in the next few chapters.

Chapters 2-7 are largely about how the mind works and how to leverage the subconscious. The Miracle -working power of the subconscious and narratives on mental healings reinforce the author’s statement in chapter 1 and help the reader make some firm decisions as he realises that the power is within.

Chapters 8-19 are about various outcomes and how the subconscious mind helps us get there. Financial and Business success, scientific research, Sleep, forgiveness, removal of fear and mental blocks, all deal with real life situations. This is where the book ceases to be a commentary and becomes a teacher, a guide.

Chapter 20 is the icing on the cake. It corelates life’s experiences to the Spirit and unfolds the grandiose vision that the subconscious mind never grows old as it is none other than the inner spirit. This learning creates a message of permanence, and the book transcends from ordinary to the sublime.

The author has mentioned a few techniques to strengthen the subconscious like visualization, meditation, affirmations and practising positive emotions.

Some of the key messages that have resonated with me and have given me a sense of direction are:

  1. Never say, “I can’t”. Overcome the fear by substituting the following: “I can do all things through the power of my subconscious mind”

  2. Every thought is a cause, and every condition is an effect.

  3. Keep your conscious mind busy with the expectation of the best, and your subconscious will faithfully reproduce your habitual thinking.

  4. Fear and doubt weaken the subconscious influence.

  5. Inner peace and faith lead to better decisions and outcomes.

  6. The solution lies within the problem. The answer is in every question. Infinite intelligence responds to you as you call upon it with faith and confidence.

At the end of the book, I feel powerful. I can face every situation armed with the knowledge that the power lies within me to overcome the fear and remove every mental block.

The anticipation created at the start of the book, followed by a call to take a leap of faith by invoking the subconscious, finally promises a road to endless happiness!

Very empowering and transforming.
